About me
From Medicine... to Rehab... to Health!
It has been a journey to go from having no clue what to do in medicine, to finding Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and finally to Functional Medicine.
What do I mean by no clue in medicine? Medical school is a daunting process that is mysterious mostly because of the shear quantity of information required to become a physician.
That's why it is so easy to miss the small things as a medical doctor: we want doctors who won't miss the obviously big, bad things. But, the ignored, small things add up...
In rehab medicine, I found patients when they were often at their worst, but saw that they had an opportunity to find their way to a new life of hope. Yet, I was left feeling that for all of the good the team was doing, there was so much more I wanted to see happen.
That is why, after years of helping both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, I started moving towards a practice of maximizing health - even when symptoms rage. I found myself working hard at the Veterans Integrative Pain Center at the Richmond VA Medical Center in the midst of complex chronic pain cases.
It was in this time, I was educated in Functional Medicine, a method of working toward best health through thorough, root-cause analysis of various symptoms. The Institute for Functional Medicine opened up my understanding of how to evaluate patients to aim for their best body and mind function.
Coupling my training in rehabilitation medicine and functional medicine has brought my story full circle - to understand the effect on our lives of even the small things: food, sleep, exercise, stress, and the impact of medicines and supplements.
I believe holistic health is whole body health and integrative medicine is viewing the body from more than one point of view. I believe that we can understand and impact our lives through the small things - the regular rhythms of living. And this journey can begin by asking the first question: are you ready to change your life?
I am a trained and certified Functional Medicine provider and I participate regularly with their educational activities.
Other activities I am involved in include American Red Cross training for CPR/AED and First Aid for bystanders. This would be on a pre-scheduled and contracted basis. Please use the contact page to inquire.
